Abstract

Background. Anxiety is a normal human psychological response towards stressor. It consists of physiological and psychological component. A kind of stressor that may provoke anxiety is surgical operation. About 90% of pre-operative patients experiencing anxiety. This can lead to posponment or cancellation of the surgical operation. Any cancellation may worsen the patient's condition. This study was aimed to detennine the prevalence of anxiety among yre-operative patient and their age, sex, education, economical status and the planned surgical operation. Method. This study was a descriptive survey using cros-sectionals approach. It was conducted to any array of subjects choosen by accidental sampling among pre­ operative patients at surgical department of Mo/1ammad Hoesin Hospital in Palembang within November-Desember 2011. The conditi-m of an'Ciety was identified using the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale. Data was presented with tables and narative description. Result. There were 98 subjects that met the criteria and 93 people (94.89%) of them was identified anxiety. Among them, 47 people (48%) suffered from mild anxiety ,26 people (26.5% )suffered from mild to moderate c:miety, 20 peoples (20%) sufferd from moderate to severe anxiety. Conclusion. This study indicated a large number of subject suffered from an'Ciety. The level of anxiety mostly indentified was mild
