Abstract

Background: Senile cataract is a cloudiness of the lens that occurs in the age of 40 years. The prevalence of cataract is approximately 4.99% in Indonesia. Aging is a major risk factor of cataract. Besides it, occupation and economic status influence the occurance of senile cataract as well. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of senile cataract and it's relationship with occupation and economic status. Methods: This study was designed in descriptive-analytic method with cross sectional approachment held in July 2012 to January 2013 in Kecamatan Kalidoni Palembang. The total of samples assigned in this study is 109 samples aged 40 years old. The independent variables were occupation and economic status, while the dependent variable was senile cataract. Data was obtained from questionnaires through interviews and direct examination of the samples. Bivariate data analysis using Chi-square test. Results: The prevalence of senile cataract in Kecamatan Kalidoni Palembang was 33%. Univariate analysis showed the largest distribution of senile cataractwas those in the group of 50-59 years old in age (35,8%), are women (66,1%), whose occupations were indoor works (68,8%), were in high economic status (52,3%), with normal visus of ocular dextra (72,5%), and normal visus of ocular sinistra (68,8%). Bivariate analysis showed the relationship of occupation with senile cataract was p=0,905 while the relationship of economic status with senile cataract was p=O,030. Conclusion: The prevalence of senile cataract in Kecamatan Kalidoni was in the high rate. There was a relationship between senile cataract and economic status, whereas there was no relationship between senile cataract and occupation.
