Abstract

Ludwigia octovalvis belongs to Ludwigia genus from family of Onagraceae. Some bioactivities from extract of this plant had been reported such as antioxidant and antidiabetic. The antioxidant activity from the leaves and stem of L. octovalvis extract have been reported. Previous studies have been successfully isolated methyl gallate and quercetin from L. octovalvis fruit.Meanwhile, the antioxidant activity from the fruit have not reported yet. The research was conducted to determine the total phenolic, flavonoid, antioxidant activity and to determine of methyl gallate content in the ethyl acetate fraction of L. octovalvis fruit.The extraction was done by maceration using methanol solvent, continuing with liquid fractionation using n-hexane and followed by ethyl acetate. The ethyl acetat fraction was analyzed for total phenolic and flavonoid content using the colorimetry method, determination of methyl gallate content using the densitometry method and its antioxsidant activity was determined using the DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) method. The result showed that the total phenolic content of the ethyl acetate fraction was 193.66 mgGAE/g. The total flavonoid content of the ethyl acetate fraction was 85.66 mgQE/g. The methyl gallate content obtained based on the densitometry method was 0.59 mg/g. Antioxidant activity with DPPH method of ethyl acetate fraction, methyl gallate and quercetin showed IC50 values of 12.44 mg/L, 24.35 mg/L and 26.94 mg/L, respectively which belongs to the category of strong antioxidants.
