Abstract
Spodoptera frugiperda J.E. Smith (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a major pest of corn originating from America and spreading rapidly to several countries such as Africa. Damage caused by S. frugiperda can be detrimental to farmers economically. The total loss of corn production in Indonesia reached 18 million tonnes/year. Corn farmers tend to use synthetic pesticides to control S. frugiperda, but the use of pesticides can cause pest resistance and negatively affect the surrounding environment. Therefore, environmentally friendly control is needed, such as the use of entomopathogenic fungi. The entomopathogenic fungi Metarhizium anisopliae and Beauveria bassiana have been widely used in several countries to control S. frugiperda larvae. This is because entomopathogenic fungi are involved in direct contact with the insect's body. Information regarding the use of entomopathogenic fungi as an ovicidal S. frugiperda in South Sumatra has not been reported. This study aims to observe the effect of entomopathogenic fungi from insects on egg mortality and development of S. frugiperda. This study used the method of topical application of entomopathogenic fungi as ovicides using a Randomized Block Design (RBD) repeated three times with 1 control and 10 isolates of B. bassiana and 5 isolates of M. anisopliae. Variables observed included percentage of eggs hatching, mortality of the test insects, calculation of lethal time values (LT50 and LT95), leaf area eaten, larval weight, larval droppings weight, pupal weight, pupal length, male and female imago length, male imago wing span and female, the ratio of male and female imago, the percentage of pupae appeared, the percentage of imago appeared, and the number of eggs laid. The results of this study were that the two genera of entomopathogenic fungi applied had different morphological characteristics microscopically. Isolate JGPB260521B with mortality reaching 39.67% and the shortest LT50 and LT95 namely 17.18 days and 47.76 days with symptoms of infection the larvae dry, die, stiff and the body has mycelium The conclusion of this study was that entomopathogenic fungi had an influence on the hatching and egg mortality of S. frugiperda, the highest egg mortality was from the Metarhizium genus in the JGMH170621 treatment, namely 24.21% and the highest egg mortality from the Beauveria genus in the JGTP240521B treatment, namely 23.02%. The highest larval mortality was obtained from isolate JGSR300521, namely 51% and it was proven to have a negative effect on the development of Spodoptera frugiperda.
