Abstract

Background: Endotracheal intubation for general anesthesia oflen leads to trauma of the airway mucosa resulting in postoperative sore throai. Postoperative sore throai is a common complication of anesthesia and can lead to dissatisfaction after surgery. Many factors can contribute to postoperative sore throai, but one faclor that has the strongest association is the cuff of endotracheal tube which is more than the normal range 20-30 mmHg. Duration of intubation greater than 60 minutes contributed to a higher incidence of throat complications. Objectives: This study was undertaken to determine the incidence of postoperative sore throat after endotracheal intubation in General Hospital Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang and the relation of increased endotracheal cuff pressure and duration of operation to the incidence of postoperative sore throat. Information collected was statistically tested using Fisher test. Methods: This study was a cross sectional study. Fifty two patients aged 18-65 years who had surgery with general anesthesia and endotracheal intubation were studied. The increased cuff pressure and duration of intubation were noted. The presence of sore throat were determined by an interview after surgery. Results: Twenty five (48,1%) patients experienced postoperative sore throat complications. Ten (19,2%) patients experienced mild sore throat, thirteen (25,0%) patients experienced medium sore throat, and two (3,8%) patients experienced severe sore throat. Increased endotracheal cuff pressure did not contribute to development of sore throat. Duration of operation greater than 60 minutes did not contribute to incidence of postoperative sore throat. Conclusions: Endotracheal intubation can result in trauma and pathological changes, which could lead to postoperative sore throat symptoms. There is need to further evaluate what factors will cause postoperative sore throat in General Hospital Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang.
