Abstract

Background: Anemia is common in the elderly and its prevalence increases with age. The prevalence of anemia in the elderly has been found to range from 8 to 44 percent. Evidence has accumulated that anemia is associated with increased mortality risk The purpose of this research is to determine the proportion of anemia in the elderly patients at RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang 2011. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted in RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang from October 2012 to December 2012. Consecutive samples were elderly ambulatory patients who had a complete blood count tesi in Laboratorium RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang in 2011. Hematological data was collected from patient's medical record located in Laboratorium RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. Result: 711 samples were enrolled\ 387 males and 324 females. The proportion of anemia was 32.8%. In males, the proportion was 48% and females 54%. The highest proportion was found to be in the 65-68 age group. Most of the patients had mild anemia and normocytic normochromic anemia. Conclusion: This study showed that the proportion of anemia in the elderly patients is high.
