Abstract

Background: Neonatal jaundice is a problem that often encountered in newboms. Pathologic neonatal jaundice is a type of neonatal jaundice, which appears earlier, higher in level of bilirubin serum and has its underlying pathology. Pathologic jaundice is dangerous because bilirubin level can rise higher than normal, causing bilirubin toxicity which also increases the risk of growth and development disturbance. However, epidemiological data about incidence and characteristics of pathologic jaundice in Indonesia is still limited. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to identify the incidence and characteristics of pathologic neonatal jaundice. Method: A descriptive observational research with cross-sectional approach was conducted at Neonatal Unit, Department of Pediatric, RSMH Palembang in October 2013-November 2013. Data was collected from medical record. Result: Ninety seven neonates (8,96%) were found with pathologic neonatal jaundice. The characteristics were 54 (55,7%) neonates appeared jaundice in <72 hours, 87 (89,7%) neonates with bilirubin level >12mg/dl, 84 (86,6%) aterm, 66 (68%) normal birth weight, 28 (28,9%) low birth-weight, 59 (60,8%) males and 75 (77,3%) neonates were breastfed. Most common illness was infection 58 (59,8%), 18 (18,6%) ABO incompatibility, 13 (13,4%) sepsis, 5 (5,2%) asphyxia, 2 (2,1%) polisitemia, 2 (2,1%) rhesus incompatibility and 1 (1,0%) cephal hematoma. Conclusion: The incidence of pathologic neonatal jaundice is 8,96%, the characteristics are often appeared in 72 hours with bilirubin level >12mg/dl, majority appeared in male and breastfeeding baby. The most common illness in neonates with pathologic neonatal jaundice were infection, ABO incompatibility and sepsis.
