Abstract

Background: Acute respiratory infections are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality of infectious diseases in the world. In Indonesia, acute respiratory infections (ARI) has always occupied the first cause of death of infants and toddlers. The incidence of ARI in Palembang in 2008 reached 48.8%. The high incidence of ARI was allegedly influenced by risk factors such as environmental factors, individual factors of children, and behavioral factors. The purpose of this study was to determine the factors that influence and the most influential risk factors on the incidence of respiratory infection in infants in Puskesmas of subdistrict Sematang Borang Palembang. Methods: This type of study was an observational analytic study with cross sectional design. This study was conducted from September 20, 2011 to October 25, 2011 at the health center of sub-district Sematang Borang Palembang. The study population was children aged 2 months-5 years who visited the health center of sub-district Sematang Borang Palembang. The sample in this study were selected using consecutive sampling technique. The research data was obtained from primary data and secondary data. Statistical data analysis techniques using the chi-square test and binary logistic regression analysis. Results: Found 94 samples, 49 male children (52.1%) and 45;female children (47.9%). Distribution of economic status is quite 45 children (47.9%), smoking habit did not exist 17 children (18.1%), density of residential 38 children (40.4%), normal birth weight 55 children (58.5%), complete of immunization status 53 children (56.4%), provision of a complete vitamin A 36 children (38.3%), and good nutritional status of 54 children (57.4%). ARI incidence often 62 children (66.0%) and the rare incidence of ARI 32 children (34.0%). The results of chisquare analysis showed that there is a relationship between provision of vitamin A and respiratory events (p = 0.000 <0.05, OR = 9.632 and 95% Cl = 3.602 to 25.761), there is a relationship between immunization status with the incidence of ARI (p = 0.001 < 0.005, OR = 5.617 and 95% Cl = 2.026 to 15.575) and there is a relationship between economic status with the incidence of ARI (p = 0.002 <0.05, OR = 4.646 and 95% Cl = 1.834 to 11.774). Conclusion: There is a relationship between vitamin A, immunization status and economic status with the incidence of ARI in children aged 2 months-5 years.
