Abstract

Background : Hypertension is a condition in which there is an increase in ubnormal blood pressure. In the elderly there is a decrease in body functions, one of which is in the circulatory system. A decrease in the elasticity of the walls of blood vessels can lead to an increase in blood pressure. Progressive muscle relaxation therapy is one of the non-pharmacological methods used to reduce blood pressure, reduce pain intensity, relieve muscle tension, and improve comfort in the elderly. Method: The method used is qualitative research with a case study approach in the elderly with hypertension Results: In the study showed that there was a decrease in blood pressure in client J, before being given blood pressure therapy 173/98 mmHg, after being given therapy to 155/87 mmHg. In client H before being given blood pressure therapy 180/96 mmHg, after being given therapy to 166/90 mmHg, and in client Z before being given blood pressure therapy 167/99 mmHg , after being given therapy to 131/83 mmHg. In addition, complaints of pain and sleeplessness in the elderly decreased Discussion: High blood pressure can be bad for the body, if blood pressure is not well controlled it can be complications, namely, heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, retinopathy, vascular disease and disorders of the nerves. In addition to taking medications, doing progressive muscle relaxation independently can help control high blood pressure in the elderly.
