Abstract
Background: Thalassemia is the most prevalent traits disease in Indonesia. In Palembang, 13,4% people are the carrier of a thalassemian and 8% of people are the carrier of P thalassemia Thalassemia children are vulnerable of malnutrition. Whereas, nutrition is one of the important thing for healing process from infection, which in thalassemian children risk higher. It motivates me to study about it Aims: This study was conducted to determine nutritional status and the distribution based on some factors of thalassemia children who is admitted for transfusion in pediatric department of dr. Mohammad Hoesin general hospital Palembang from October-December 2012. Metohod: Prospective descriptive study was carried out from October-December 2012. The result were described in the paper with tables and graphics. Result: The samples were 12 toddlers and 68 children 5-19 years old. 25% toddlers have malnutrition condition. More than 75% children 5-19 years old have malnutrition based on weight for age and height for age. Only 19.1% 5-19 years old children have malnutrition condition based on weight for height. 72.5% children with thalassemian consumed inadequate daily calories which is needed for their activity and growth. Conclusion: Malnutrition in toddlers are not clearly based on weight for height. In category 5-19 years old children, short term and long term malnutrition have been indicated. Thalassemia children need more attention for their daily calories intake. More study is needed to determine the most defective risk factors to prevent malnutrition condition in thalassemia patient.
