Abstract

Background: Proptosis is the most common symptom in patient who came to the eye clinic. Generally, research on proptosis is still very limited in Indonesia and especially in the Eyes Department of Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang. This stndy was aimed to identify the characteristics of patients in the Eyes Department of Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. Methods: The stndy use descriptive observational method, conducted on November- December 2012 in Eyes Department of Medical Record of Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. Population and sample included all proptosis patients on period November 2008 - November 2012. Results: This study found 81 proptosis patients (31,03%), consisting 37 male patient (41.97%) and 47 female patient (58.03%). The study also found the proptosis has its most prevalence at the ages of 40-59 years (29.63%) while the least at ages 0-9 years (1.23%) and 80-87 years (1.23%). The Proptosis often caused by retrobulbar tumors (27.18%), pseudotumor (25.93%), grave ophthalmopathy (13.59%). Unilateral proptosis established in 93.82% of population. By level proptosis is divided into mild (85.18%), medium (11.12%) and severe (3.7%). The population of visual acuity consisting 20,99% normal patient, 20.99% light visual impairment 7.42% with visual impairment, while 8.62% has severe visual impairment and blindness 41.98%. Onetliird of the population complaint a prominent eyes. Conclusion: This study found 81 proptosis patients (31.03%). Most cases obtained at the ages of 40-59 years (29.63%). Ratio of male and female patient is 1:1,4. The most etiology of proptosis is cause by retrobulbar tumor (27.18%). Unilateral proptosis found in 93.82% of the population. The study proved that most cases included mild proptosis (85.18%). The most visual acuity in population is blind (41.98%) and third of the population complaint a prominent eyes.
