Abstract

Background: The 21st century experienced an increase in audiovisual and telecommunications technology. The use of earphones in adolescents increases to listen to music so that they are exposed to chronic noise and will begin to experience various symptoms of ear disorders (itching, pain, buzzing, etc.) and eventually reduced hearing function. Objectives: To find out whether there is a relationship between the use of earphones and the occurrence of hearing loss due to noise in students of the Faculty of Medicine Sriwijaya University Class of 2022. Methods: Design of this study is cross-sectional analytic. Data were analyzed using chi-square and fisher's exact tests with SPSS version 26. Results: In this study, there was a significant relationship between the duration of using earphones with hearing loss in the left ear (p=0.028) and the frequency of using earphones within a week with hearing loss in the left ear (p=0.008) and right ear (p=0.023). However, this study did not find a significant relationship between the duration of using earphones with hearing loss in the right ear (p=0.064), the volume of using earphones with hearing loss in the left ear (p=0.898) and the right ear (p=1), and length of using earphones with hearing loss in the left ear (p=1) and right ear (p=0.256). Conclusion: In this study it was concluded that there was a relationship between the duration of using earphones with the occurrence of hearing loss in the left ear and the frequency of using earphones in a week with the occurrence of hearing loss in the left and right ears. However, there was no significant relationship between the duration of using earphones in the right ear and the volume of earphone use and the lenght of using earphone by year with hearing loss in the right and left ears.
