Abstract
ASSAB 705 steel has a carbon content of 0.38%–0.43%. ASSAB 705 steel is used as gear components, piston connecting rods, and shafts. Efforts to make the steel more resistant to friction are made by hardening the quenching method. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of different cooling media for the hardening process on the hardness of ASSAB 705 steel. The type of research used was experimental research. small cylinders with a diameter of 20 mm and a thickness of 20 mm. The specimens were heated in a furnace at a temperature of 9000 C with a cooling medium of early maturing coconut water (pH 4.9), graded coconut water (pH 4.8), and hybrid coconut water (pH 5.0), which would then be tested for hardness by the Vickers method with a load of 30 kgf. It is proven different cooling media types of coconut water affect the hardness of ASSAB 705 steel with the highest hardness result was in the hybrid coconut water quenching specimen at pH 5.0 with a hardness value of 631.12 kgf/mm2, then in the early maturing coconut water quenching specimen at pH 4.9 with a hardness value of 581.52 kgf/mm2, and the lowest hardness value was in the coconut water quenching specimen at a pH level of 4.8 with a hardness value of 572.07 kgf/mm2.
