Abstract

Food and horticultural crops are main commodities in the agricultural sector which are needed for living. Production activities require the capacity of farmers who are able to develop potential and innovation in the cultivation of food and horticultural crops which are often constrained by pests and plant diseases which can reduce production. Therefore, it is important for farmers to understand the application of environmentally friendly integrated pest and disease management (IPM). Land ownership status is considered to be able to influence agricultural activities, including influencing planting techniques, planting patterns, planting intensity, farmers' income and others. Decision making in applying control technology (IPM) and carrying out cultivation activities is influenced by land ownership status. This study aims to evaluate the compliance of food and horticultural crops farmers with the status of private land and sharing in implementing IPM in South Sumatra. The method applied in determining and observing the percentage and intensity of pests and diseases was purposive sampling method. The results found that some farmers know and have applied the IPM concept with the aim at reducing the rate of development of pests and diseases which are reflected in the behavior of farmers, but do not fully understand the IPM concept. IPM scores of farmers with private land status with a score of 64.68% are higher than land borrowing farmers with a score of 60.91%. Farmers with borrowed land status have a higher percentage score and intensity of pest and disease attack than owner farmers. The relationship between IPM scores and pest and disease attacks in the field has a low correlation to pest and disease intensity, meaning that IPM implementation is only small factor in affecting plant pest and diseases, the rest is determined by other factors.
