Abstract

Background: Congenital heart disease (CHD) is one of the most common congenital diseases, around 8 out of 1000 babies are born with this condition. There are two types of CHD, namely cyanotic such as tetralogy of fallot and acyanotic such as ventricular septal defects. In children with CHD, developmental delays are generally found, especially in motor development, cognition, and language. This is influenced by the imperfect development of macrostructure and microstructure of the brain due to decreased oxygen and tissue perfusion especially to the brain. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is an association between the type of congenital heart disease and the developmental status of children at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. Method: The research design is analytic observational with a cross-sectional design. The study used primary data from respondents who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. All data was obtained through direct KPSP examination of pediatric patients aged 6-72 months who were diagnosed with congenital heart disease at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin without any other congenital diseases. Results: In this study there were 43 patients with 9 cyanotic CHD patients and 34 acyanotic CHD patients. Among these patients it was found that 13 children had developmental delays, especially in fine motor skills. Through bivariate analysis, it was found that there was a significant relationship between nutritional status (p= 0.003) and the type of congenital heart disease (p = 0.042) and the developmental status of children in RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. In addition, there was no relationship between age (p= 0.405), gender (p= 0.573), mother's education (p= 0.613), mother's age (p = 0.217), gestational age (p= 0.518), birth order (p=0.807), and number of siblings (p= 0.237) on the child's developmental status. Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between cyanotic and acyanotic congenital heart disease with the developmental status of children.
