Abstract

Open green space in urban areas can be utilized in many ways. Recently, more of the open space has been cultivated for vegetable productions, gradually shifted from houseplants to more productive plants that can be consumed and are beneficial to health. Urban vegetable farming can be conventionally practiced on a limited yard. Our research aimed to determine the tolerance limits of growth and yield of purple pakchoi (Brassica rapa var. chinensis) on shading, split fertilizer applications, cultivation techniques, and population. The research was arranged based on the Split Plot Design and carried out in two stages. The first stage of the research, treatment of shading as the main plot and the split fertilizer applications as a subplot. The second stage of the research, treatment of cultivation techniques as the main plot and the population as a subplot. The results showed that shading treatment at 0%, 45%, 55%, and 80% significantly affected morphological traits, including stem length, number of leaf, length and width of leaf blades, petiole length, canopy diameter, leaf SPAD, fresh and dry weight of leaf blades; petiole; stem; roots, and root length; but did not significantly affect the leaf thickness. Purple pakchoi prefers full sunlight; however, it can still grow and give optimal yields on 45%-55% shading. All properties affected by 80% shading inhibited growth. The leaf of purple pakchoi reached its maximum size at less than 14 days counted from the first day of leaf blade was fully unfolded. Purple pakchoi can be harvested at 35 days after planting. The accurate leaf area estimation in purple pakchoi can be achieved by using P×L as predictor and calculated using power regression (R² = 0.9806). The treatment of split fertilizer applications has no influence on the growth and yield of the purple pakchoi. The floating cultivation techniqeu showed the best results on the growth of purple pakchoi, including the number of leaf, length and width of the leaf blade, petiole length, and canopy diameter. The yield of the purple pakchoi, such as the total fresh weight per plant, the total fresh weight per pot, fresh and dry weight of the leaf blade; petiole; stem; root, stem diameter, and root length are influenced by population density. Purple pakchoi gives optimal results on a population of 1-2 plants per pot with a pot area 530 cm². The lower level of population, total fresh weight per plant will be high and the total fresh weight per area is low; the opposite nature applies. The specific leaf area of the purple pakchoi ranges from 22.2-25.8 cm² with a weight of > 0.01 g. Differences in cultivation techniques and populations have no effect on the morphology of purple pakchoi. Environmental temperature conditions and soil conditions do not lead excessive transpiration. The temperature of purple pakchoi leaves ranges from 29.8°C-33°C.
