Abstract

Background: Parkinson's disease (PP) was first discovered in 1817, during the last century the understanding of PP has developed rapidly. Loss of pigmentation in the substantia nigra is a feature of PP and then progresses to loss of dopamine in the subcortical motor circuits involved in movement disorders in PP. The number of cases of PP increases with age. The prevalence of PP cases has doubled in the last 25 years, the highest prevalence of PP was found in several countries including Indonesia in 2019. The cause of PP is also associated with the use of pesticides, herbicides, and the environment around industrial factories which accumulate in mitochondria. Oxidation and formation of free radicals can cause damage to the nuclei of the thalamus. The purpose of this study was to describe environmental risk factors in patients with Parkinson's disease. The aim of this study was to describe environmental risk factors in patients with Parkinson's disease. Methods: This research was carried out at the PUSRI Hospital in Palembang. This study included 25 patients with Parkinson's disease. Data was collected using primary and secondary data, in the form of direct interviews with patients or patient families (caregivers) and medical records. Results: It was found that the age group experience PP at the age of 60 years and over. In the female sex, the majority experienced PP. The. The majority of patients experiencing PP occur during a period of <5 years. Pesticide exposure showed no history, then there was a history of mild head trauma before being diagnosed with PP. The majority of patients with PP have lived in an agrarian village early in life, no significant history of agricultural occupation was found. The use of well water in daily life is mostly used for 15 years. Conclusion: Patients with a history of exposure to pesticides did not have a history. However, the majority had a history of mild head trauma, rural life, and use of well water for PP. Keywords: Parkinson's disease, exposure to pesticides, environmental risk factors, head trauma, well water.
