Abstract

Background: Antibiotic resistance has become a serious world heath problem. The death rate due to antibiotic resistance is increasing, which is equal to 700,000 cases per year. This incident is caused by the use of antibiotic drugs that are not appropriate in the community. 35.2% of 294,959 households in Indonesia store medicines for self-medication. 27.8% of them are antibiotics, and 86.1% of these antibiotics are obtained without a prescription from a doctor. The behavior of using antibiotics in housewives can be influenced by the knowledge and attitudes. This study aims to determine the relationship between knowledge and attitudes with the behavior of using antibiotics in housewives at RW II Kecamatan Kemuning Kota Palembang. Method: This study is an observational study using a cross-sectional research design. Data of this research was obtained through primer data. Data was analyzed using chi-square test. Results: Out of all 143 samples, the majority of participants had high knowledge (67,1%), positive attitude (65,0%), and good behaviour of using antibiotics (70,6%). Chi-square test shows that there was an association between knowledge and behavior of using antibiotics (p=0,000). There was also an association between attitude and behavior of using antibiotics (p=0,000). Conclusions: This study showed that there was a significant association between knowledge and attitude with housewives’ behavior of using antibiotics at RW II Kecamatan Kemuning Kota Palembang.
