Abstract

Background: This research was conducted to know whether Plumeria rubra leaves extract has antifungal activity against Candida albicans causing candidiasis; to know wich extract has better effect against Candida albicans growth; and to assess The Minimum lnhibitory Concentration (MIC). Methods: This research was designed as laboratory experimental, using Posttest Only Control group design. Plumeria leaves extract was obtained by multilevel maceration method using two solvents, consist aethyl acetat, and methanol. Then, extract was tested to perform antifungal activity against Candida albicans using Kirby-Bauer Disc Method and then the result was statistically analyzed by SPSS version 18 for Windows. Results: Both of Plumeria rubra leaves extract from aethylacetat and methanol solvents can inhibit the Candida albicans growth in the Sabouroud Dextrose Agar medium. And both of them have the same effectiveness in term of antifungal activity in inhibiting the Candida albicans growth. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for aetil acetat extract is 0,02 gr/ml; and for methanol extract is 0,03 gr/ml. The concentration of aetyl acetat extract has an average level of correlation to the inhibitory zone diameter according to its Pearson correlation value (r = 0,394); but this correlation is not significant based on its significant value (p = 0,131) while the concentration of methanol extract has a strong level of correlation to the inhibitory zone diameter with its Pearson correlation value (r) 0,744 and significant value (p) — 0,000. Conclusion: Both of Plumeria rubra leaves extract from aethyl acetat and methanol solvents has antifungal activity in inhibiting Candida albicans growth in Sabouroud Dextrose Agar media.
