Abstract

This research was aimed to stimulate the germination of sunflower seeds by using Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) 6000 after dormancy breaking by physical. This research carried out in September to November 2022, in Laboratory of Seed Technology, Sriwijaya University, Indralaya. This research was conducted using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 6 treatments and it consisted of 4 replications, each replication consisting of 25 seeds. Before priming with PEG 6000, dormancy breaking is by rubbed the seeds on sandpaper. The results of the research showed that the germination rate and vigor index tended to increase at PEG 6000 concentrations of 0,1 g/ml, 0,2 g/ml 0,3 g/ml with the longest soaking time. Germination increased by 56% at a concentration of 0,2 g/ml for 8 hours, with the same concentration of PEG 6000 was able to increase the parameter of germination rate and radicle length. Meanwhile fresh weight, dry weight, plumule length, and the uniformity growth parameter increased well at a concentration of 0,3 g/ml. There is a tedency that longer soaking at each concentration of PEG 6000 has a good effect on the parameter tested and the treatment of priming with PEG 6000 was able to increase germination even though it had no significant effect compared to the treatment without priming with PEG 6000.
