Abstract

STUDENT FROM BATAK COMMUNICATING ACROSS CULTURES (PHENOMENOLOGICAL STUDY OF BEHAVIORAL ADAPTATION OF BATAK STUDENTS, CLASS OF 2019-2018). CULTURAL ADAPTATION BASED ON THE INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION THEORY DEVELOPED BY BATAK STUDENTS AND PUBLISHED IN COMMUNICATION AND CROSS-CULTURAL ADAPTATION, AN INTEGRATIVE THEORY OF INTERCOMUNICATION BY YOUNG YUN KIM. THIS STUDY'S GOAL WAS TO DETERMINE HOW IDEA OF CULTURAL ADAPTATION ITSELF INFLUENCES HOW STUDENTS FROM VARIOUS CULTURES INTERACT AND ADAPT TO ANOTHER. THIS STUDY EMPLOYS A QUALITATIVE METHODOLOGY AND PHENOMENOLOGY. THE THEORY OF INTERCULTURAL ADAPTATION INVOLVES DYNAMIC COMMUNICATION. THE STAGES OF THE ADAPTATION PROCESS INCLUDE ENCULTURATION, STRESS AND ADAPTATION, LEARNING AND NOT-LEARNING, ACCULTURATION AND DEACULTURATION, CRISIS AND RESOLUTION, AND ASSIMILATION, AND LEARNING THE RESEARCH'S DATA CAME FROM PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SOURCES AS WELL AS IN-DEPTH INTERVIEWS FINDINGS AND OBSERVATIONS PRODUCED FROM INFORMANTS VIEWPOINTS ON INFORMANTS IN VARIOUS CULTURAL CONTEXTS. THE FINDINGS OF THE STUDY OF SIX INFORMANTS SUPPORT THEORETICAL UNDERSTENDING, AND THE RESEARCHER DRAWS THE CONCLUSION THAT CONFIRMED INFORMANTS GO THROUGH STAGES OF CULTURAL ADAPTATION.
