Abstract

This research aimed to improve the germination of sunflower seeds by using KNO3 after dormancy breaking by physical. This research carried out at the Laboratory of Seed Technology, Sriwijaya University, Indralaya, from September to November 2022. This research was conducted using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 6 treatments and was repeated 4 times, each replication contained 25 seeds. Dormancy breaking was done by rubbed the seeds with sanding paper before priming with KNO3. The results of the research showed that KNO3 soaking treatment with concentration of 250 mg/L was able to obtain the highest average values in parameters of fresh weight of sprout, plumule length, and vigor index. The soaking treatmen on concentration of 500 mg/L was able to obtain the highest average values in parameters dry weight of sprout. Then on concentration of 750 mg/L was able to obtain the highest on parameters seed germinations, radicle length, germination rate and the uniformity growth. There is a tedency that longer soaking at each concentration of KNO3 has a good effect on the parameter tested. The treatment of priming with KNO3 was able to increase germination even though it had no significant effect compared to the treatment without priming with KNO3.
