Abstract

Spodoptera frugiperda is one of the important invasive pests that cause damage to maize. An attack by S. frugiperda larvae can cause up to 100% damage by attacking the growing points of plants. Endophytic fungi are one of the biological controls that have been widely used in many developed countries. The use of fungal endophytes applied topically to larvae is necessary to determine larval mortality and negative effects on the development of S. frugiperda. This research was conducted at the Entomology Laboratory of the Department of Plant Pests and Diseases, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University, from July to November 2022. This research method used a completely randomized design (CRD) with 13 treatment isolates and 1 control, which was repeated 3 times. The isolates used were endophytic isolates obtained from plant tissues in South Sumatra, namely GaTpeOi, JgTjPr, PiCrPga, CaCjPga, PsgTjPr, JgByU, JaBuBys, JgPWSR, JaGiPRB, CMTJP, JgTgSr, JaMsBys, and JaSpkPGA (2). The average observed temperature was 27.68 °C and 83.56% relative humidity (RH) during one life cycle of S. frugiperda. The results showed that all the endophytic fungal isolates used were entomopathogenic and could cause mortality in S. frugiperda larvae. Isolate JaSpkPGA (2) caused the highest larval mortality of 53.33%, while the lowest mortality percentages of GaTpeOi and CaCjPga were 25.33%, respectively. S. frugiperda infected with entomopathogenic endophytic fungi had a negative impact on development. Pupae appeared normal the lowest was isolate JaBuBys 38.67%, and pupae appeared abnormal the highest was JaBuBys 9.33%. The highest failure of pupation to emerge was in JaSpkPGA (2) isolate at 57.33%, and the lowest failure to emerge was in GaTpOI isolate at around 29.33%. While the lowest normal appearance of imago was PsgTjPr, JgByu, JaBuBys, and JaSpkPGA (2), each at 34.57%, The highest abnormal appearance of imago was in PsgTjPr isolate (14.67%), and failure to appear was highest in JaSpkPGA (2) isolate (57.33%). The conclusion of this study shows that the entomopathogenic endophytic fungus isolate JaSpkPGA (2) caused the highest larval mortality of 53.33% and was not significantly different from the treatment of isolates PsgTjPr (46.67%), JgByu (48.0%), JaBuBys (49.5%), and JgPWSR (50.67%) and had a negative effect on larval weight, pupae appearing and failing to emerge, pupa weight, body length and wingspan of imago, imago appearing and failing to emerge, number of eggs produced, and hatched eggs of S. frugiperda.
