Abstract

Communication accommodation is the ability to adjust, modify and regulate one's behavior when responding to communication or the behavior of others. Teaching Campus is one of the Ministry of Education and Culture's Independent Campus programs which are engaged in education through the role of students to become teacher assistants in teaching students in the 4T areas (frontier, outermost, disadvantaged, and transmigration areas). 2022 is the third time this program has been implemented and for the first time students have moved a lot across regions so as to create a space for intercultural communication between students and residents of the assigned areas. This study aims to determine the form of accommodation made by Sriwijaya University students in the Teaching Campus program during assignments outside South Sumatra. The research data were obtained from the results of in-depth interviews and documentation studies related to students' experiences with qualitative research methods with a phenomenological approach. This study uses the theory of Communication Accommodation which categorizes accommodation into three forms namely Convergent, Divergent, and Excessive Accommodation and data analysis using a Phenomenological approach which looks at students' meaning of the cultural experiences they bring as identity and cultural experience obtained at the assignment place. The results of this study indicate that the forms of accommodation by students that are dominantly carried out are convergence, there are also forms of divergence which are carried out to highlight their culture so that they know each other better and have a closer relationship. The experience that students bring from their regions turns out to have a different meaning in the assignment area so that there is adjustment. The experience received, felt, and experienced during the assignment is interpreted as an opportunity for new experiences, relationships, to understand Indonesia's wealth and diversity.
