Abstract

The online news portal Detikcom published three different headlines regarding the suicide case of a student with the initials (A) in Bali. Detikcom is one of the online media in Indonesia that emphasizes the speed of time in publishing its news. This study aims to conduct a critical discourse analysis of the three news headlines and how the three stories published by the Detikcom media can lead to negative social stigma towards people with mental health disorders, especially perpetrators and victims of suicide. The data were obtained from a documentation study using qualitative research methods. This study uses the theory of moral panic which has three parts of analysis, namely the creation of a folk devil, agenda setting, and strengthening of issues. The results of this study indicate that the Detikcom media in their reporting forms a discourse that people with mental health disorders and victims as well as perpetrators of suicide act as detrimental and dangerous. This mistake, if it continues, can have a big impact on psychologists, people with similar mental health problems, and families left behind.
