Abstract

Social media dependence can be influenced by social problems that a person experiences. One of them is social anxiety, namely anxiety due to social situations that cause several sets of physical symptoms and can interfere with one's activities. This research was conducted by filling out the SAS-A questionnaire to measure social anxiety and the BSMAS questionnaire to measure the level of social media dependence. This is a quantitative study with a cross-sectional and correlational research design. The research population was all Sriwijaya University students, class of 2019, using the cluster random sampling technique to take a sample of 130 students. The results showed that there was a relationship between social media dependence and social anxiety (p-value = 0.001), gender (p-value = 0.018), and the level of loneliness (p-value = 0.001), and there was no relationship between media dependency and social media with pocket money (p-value = 0.336) or the duration of using social media (value = 0.157). It was concluded that there was an increase in each value of social anxiety, so the level of dependence on social media would increase by 0.203 after controlling for the variable level of loneliness. To reduce or overcome this, the university and other regulations can establish data collection and counseling programs per faculty, and students can pay more attention to their mental health and be wiser in their use of social media by increasing socialization in real life and spending time with family and friends, i.e activities unrelated to social media.
