Abstract

Background: Overweight dan obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extend that it may have an adverse effect on health, leading to reduced life expectancy and/or increased health problems. Obesity is a multifactorial and is related to the intake of food that is consumed. This research is done to know the relationship between breakfast and obesity in children of Azzahrah Elementary School Palembang. Method: The type of research was a cross-sectional design. This research was done on January 2014 at Azzahrah Elementary School Palembang. The population in this study was all students of 6th grade of Azzahrah Elementary School Palembang. The sample size were 98 students who determined based on criteria of inclusion and exclusion. Results: From 98 students there were 30 students that were overweight and obese. The ratio of man (40,5%) was higher than woman (23,2%). From the statitical analysis of Chi-Square, factors which has influenced the respondents to be overweight and obesity was breakfast (p=0,002; OR=5,8); father IMT (p=0,001; OR=8,4); mother IMT (p=0,029; OR=2,9); and siblings obesity (p=0,003; OR=14,8) Conclusion: The children who did not consume breakfast is at risk 5,8 times of being overweight and obese than children who is did not consume breakfast.
