Abstract

Atraumatic Restorative Trealment (ART) is a technigue for treating dental caries using hand instruments to clean dental cavities. Glass Ionomer Cement are restorative materials used in this technique (GIC ART). Some researchers have modified GIC with antimicrobial agents such as chlorhexidine. Compressive strength is important in many restorative dental materials. This study aimed to determine the effect of chlorhexidine solution concentrations on the compressive strength of GIC ART. Chlorhexidine solution was added into liquid and mixed with powder to produce samples. Thirty two samples of GIC ART (4 mm in diameter, 6 mm in height) were divided into 4 groups, control group (without chlorhexidine) and groups with the addition of 2.5%, 5%, and 10% chlorhexidine. Compressive strength was tested using a Universal Testing Machine and the values were determined in MP a. The data were analyzed by One Way ANOVA and continued by Post-Hoc LSD. Mean of compressive strength value were 155,34+8,31 MP a (control group), 150,29+ 8,10 MP a (2,5% chlorhexidine group), 141,13±8,92 MP a (5% chlorhexidine group), and 129,83+8,91MP a (10% chlorhexidine group). There was a significant difference (p<0,05) in compressive strength analyzed with One Way ANOVA. Post-Hoc LSD showed that there were significant decrease (p<0,05) in compressive strength in 5% and 10% chlorhexidine groups, but there was no significant decrease (p>0,05) in 2.5% chlorhexidine group. It can be concluded that the concentrations of chlorhexidine solution at 5% and 10% could decrease the compressive strength of GIC ART.
