Abstract

Open defecation and sanitation are still problems in riverside settlements such as in Kelurahan 13 Ulu, Palembang City. The high prevalence of environment-based diseases such as diarrhea in riverside settlements is still a problem in the area. What's more, according to the 2020 Palembang City Health Profile, the Sebrang Ulu II sub-district is a sub-district with 0% implementation of SBS (Stop Open Defecation). This research is to analyze the behavior of open defecation and environmental sanitation in Kelurahan 13 Ulu, Palembang city. This study used a descriptive analytic approach with a cross-sectional research design with a simple random sampling technique with a population in this study consisting of housewives living in 13 Ulu Village with a sample of 90 respondents. Analyzed using univariate and bivariate data analysis using the EHRA questionnaire instrument validated by the Ministry of Health. The results showed that there was no significant relationship between the characteristics of the respondents which included age, income level and community education on open defecation behavior with the results p=0.890 for the age variable, p=0.583 for the income level and p=0.583 for the education level variable . Then, there was a significant relationship between mother's knowledge and open defecation behavior with a result of p = 0.006, while the distance from the river to the house did not have a significant relationship with open defecation behavior with a result of p = 0.326. The conclusion of this study is the mother's lack of knowledge about open defecation behavior and the lack of awareness for SNI-based private latrine ownership
