Abstract

Dental plaque was a soft deposit that developed a biofilm attached to the surface of teeth and gum, it could lead to dental problems such as dental caries and gingivitis if not cleaned. Mechanic cleansing by brushing was an effective method to remove dental plaque. This study aimed to determine the difference of flat bristle and cross bristle toothbrush on their effectiveness to dental plaque index of college students courses in dentistry of Sriwijaya university class of2008. Sample population was 49 and 34 students was taken as the sample. 17 samples used the flat bristle toothbrush and the other 17 used the cross bristle toothbrushh. The sample requirements not on an orthodontic braces treatment, and cooperative during the study. The result of the study which used ANOVA two way, p<0,05 in static analysis showed that there was a significant difference between flat bristle and cross bristle toothbrush on their effectiveness of plaque index of college students courses in dentistry of Sriwijaya university class of 2008. The average plaque index reduction was 6,53 at first day and 6,06 at second day in the sample group that used flat bristle toothbrush and 10, liat first day and 10,42 at second day in the sample group that used cross bristle toothbrush which mean the effectiveness of cross bristle toothbrush were better than flat bristle toothbrush on reducing the plaque index.
