Abstract

Public expectations towards their dental appearance has increased nowdays. Teeth must not only look neat bui must also appear white. Bleaching commonly done in adults with permanent teeth which can make teeth become white, although there are side effects such as enamel demineralization. The purpose of this study was to measure teeth colour and calcium loss from the enamel of permanent teeth after bleaching with 10% carbamide peroxide. Six permanent canines free from caries and the root was removed. These would serve as samples in a paired test with one half subjected to the bleach and the other half as a control. Sementoenameljuntion area was coated with sticky wax. One group was the n immersed in a flask coniaining 3 ml aquadest and 10% carbamide peroxide. The control group was immersed in 3 ml aquadest only. After four, six, and eight hour, colour scale and calcium concentrations in the Solutions were measured using atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The result obtain showed average colour scale such as 48 TCU, 54 TCU, 58 TCU and average loss of 0. 263 ppm, 0.287 ppm, 0.289 ppm calcium from the control group. Whereas teeth immersed in aquadest and 10% carbamide peroxide showed average colour scale such as 110 TCU, 122 TCU, 128.66 TCU and average loss of 0.690 ppm, 0.818 ppm, 0.892 ppm calcium. Statistical analysis using one-way ANOVA showed that the colour changes and calcium loss were not significant on the control group (p>0,05), but on another group showed that the colour changes and calcium loss were significant (p<0,05). Therefore, it can be concluded that bleaching of permanent teeth isfairly safe if it is done suitable with the prosedur.
