Abstract

Thalassaemia is a congenital haemolytic anemia, caused by lack of synthesis of globin chains that construct polypeptide in the haemoglobin molecules. Patients with thalassaemia have a distinctive facial characteristic, which is known as chipmunk face in which the patient's face looks like a Mongoloid. This characteristic is often accompanied by an excessive maxillary growth. This condition can cause the occurrence of malocclusion in patients with thalassaemia. The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of malocclusion in patients with thalassaemia in RSUP Dokter Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. Writer’s use a non experimental descriptive research, in the form of purposive sampling survey. Thirty three patients with thalassaemia with routinly medicated and recorded at RSUP Dokter Mohammad Hoesin Palembang since October 2009 to July 2010 with minimum age 7 years old, were observed. Impresion of the patients were made, observed, and categorized. Study models shows all the 33 patients (100%) were categorized having Angle class II malocclusion, 6 patients (18,8%)has a division 1 Angle class II malocclusion and 27 patients (81,2%) has a division 2 Angle class II malocclusion. This study concluded that patients with thalassaemia at RSUP Dokter Mohammad Hoesin Palembang experienced malocclusion with Angle class II malocclusion is the largest incidence.
