Abstract

Research on the preparation of Li-Al alloy at various Ti/C catalyst concentrations on hydrogen adsorption capacity using the complex hydride method has been successfully carried out. This study aims to obtain the best percentage of Ti/C catalyst for hydrogen storage and to determine the thermodynamic aspects of each catalyst variation. Ti/C catalyst was made with various percentages of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10wt%. Li-Al alloy with various Ti and carbon catalysts was synthesized using a HEM shaker with the mechanical alloying method. The synthesized alloy was characterized using XRD and SEM-EDX, then its adsorption performance was tested against hydrogen gas. Adsorption performance test of Li-Al alloy with varying percentage of catalyst was carried out at pressures of 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 bar. The results of the adsorption of the Li-Al alloy obtained the optimum catalyst percentage variation at 10wt% at 5 bar pressure of 8.2wt%. Based on the XRD characterization results, the peak of the Li-Al alloy is indicated by the diffraction angle of aluminum (Al) at 2θ = 38°; 44.6°; 77°, Lithium (Li) at an angle of 2θ = 38°; 45° and Titanium (Ti) at angles of 2θ = 64°, 77°, 82° and are in accordance with JCPDS data. The SEM-EDX characterization showed that the lithium and aluminum metals with the Ti/C catalyst were mixed homogeneously, with a smooth morphology and no cracks in the LiAl-Ti/C alloy, with an average particle size of 50 µm.
