Abstract

In line with the increasing biodiesel production in Indonesia, the need for catalysts for transesterification is increasing. Potassium based catalysts are commercially widely applied in industry in the form of KOH and K2CO3 but these catalysts have weaknesses in the separation process. Solid catalysts from palm biomass can be developed into heterogeneous catalysts that are environmentally friendly, especially Empty Bunches of Oil Palm (EFB). Through the pyrolysis process, EFB is able to produce carbonate anion compounds that are quite high and easily converted into K2O. The purpose of this study was to analyze the catalyst characteristics of empty bunches of palm oil and their results on biodiesel production. Empty bunches of oil palm are calcined at a temperature of 500-700°C for 5 hours. Transterification conditions are carried out with variations in the catalyst ratio of 12-20% with a reaction time of 1 and 2.5 hours and the use of methanol variations of 25-40%. Based on the results of the study, EFB ash catalysts have proven effective as heterogeneous catalysts in the transesterification process with optimal operating conditions at the use of ash calcination 700°C for 5 hours and the use of 30% methanol for 1 hour resulting in 99.2% methyl ester. This is shown from the BET results which produce a catalyst pore surface area of 0.012 m2/g and a total catalyst pore volume of 0,007674 cc/g and a biodiesel test that meets SNI 7182: 2015, namely a total glycerol value of 0.089%, density 0.863 g/cm3, acid number 0.13 mg KOH/g, viscosity 0.110 mm2/s and methyl ester content >96%
