Abstract

Oil palm Elaeis guineensis Jacq. is a palms plant. The main pest that attacks the oil palm was rat Rattus rattus tiomanicus. The control metode carried out was biological control using the barn owl predator Tyto alba. The aim of the study was to determine the role of T. alba owls in controlling rat populations in the oil palm plantations and was expected to reduce the use of rodenticide. The study was conducted from January to May 2019 at PT. Buluh Cawang Plantation, Bumi Arjo Estate. Observation data on the presence of T. alba owls indicate that there were active gupons or those inhabited by owls. The results of the study showed that the presence of T. alba owls and the percentage of mouse attacks on oil palm plantations were related to the age of oil palm plants. The oil palm tree planted in 2014 had a higher rat infestation rate than the oil palm planted in 2008, 2011 and 2013. The higher the oil palm tree the more preferred by owl habitat and the lower pest attack. The results showed that based on pellets found T. alba could prey on small birds besides R. tiomanicus as its main prey. Data on rodenticide use to control rat pests shows that each year was different. The use of rodenticides for pest control is carried out when the rat attack reached 2% or more.
