Abstract

The aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of ginger (Zingiher offiicinal Rosc) infusum against Candida albicans. Candida albicans is kind of yeast found in gastro-intestinaJ, vaginal area cavity, and is found fifty percent in oral cavity as a commensal microorganism. In this study, ginger (Zingiher officinale Rosc) infusum was used for inhibiting the growth of Candida albicans. The study was conducted in vitro by means of Candida albicans yeast from pure culture obtained at the Microbiology Laboratory of Medicine Faculty, Sriwijaya University. From the pure culture, Candida albicans was made into suspension (Mac Farland 0,5) mixed with the ginger infusum 10% and 40% and then spread onto Sabouraud chloramphenicol agar and were incubated for 24 hours at room temperature (37° C). Control plates are immersed in sterile purified water and nystatin 1 %. There are 4 groups in this study and each group consisted of 7 samples. The assessment of Candida albicans is by counting the amount of Candida albicans colonies that grows in Sabouraud chloramphenicol agar media with the unit of Colony Forming Unit per milimeter (CFU/ml). Data analysis which was used in this study was Oneway ANOVA with the degree of trust 95% and followed by a Tukey HSD and Bonferroni test. The result showed that ginger (Zingiber officinale rosc) infusum of 10% and 40% concentration had capability of inhibiting the growth of Candida albicans.
