Abstract

Indonesia is a biodiversity country which has unique individual characteristics of each ethnicity, such as Arab and Chinese. One of those characteristics is lip print pattern. Lip print has been known to have unique pattern and ethnic variation that can be used as individual identification. The aim of this study was to determine sex of individual from Chinese and Arab ethnics. This was a cross sectional descriptive study. Lip print of 122 subjects were taken by using lipstick and celophane tape. The sex of subjects was not disclosed to avoid any observer bias. 10 mm width of middle part of the lower lip was analyzed by using classification of Suzuki and Tsuchihashi. Female was defined if vertical and branched pattern were predominant type. Male was defined if intersected and reticular pattern were predominant type. The result showed that the most predominant pattern was full vertical in Chinese and partial vertical in Arab. There were no dijferent predominant pattern between male and female. It was concluded that lip print pattern on the middle part of the lower lip could not be used to determine sex of individual from Arab and Chinese ethnics.
