Abstract

The climbing perch is a fish that has a potential to be developed. However, one of obstacles is its slow growth because climbing perch takes 6-7 months to reach a size of 8-10 cm. This study aimed to determine the feed efficiency and growth performance of climbing perch reared using the periodic fasting method and the best fasting period for climbing perch rearing. This research was conducted at the Fisheries Basic Laboratory, Aquaculture Study Program, Department of Fisheries, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sriwijaya, from September–October 2022, using a completely randomized design with four treatments and three replications. The treatments used were different fasting time; namely, the control treatment (P0) was without fasting; P1 was 1 day fasted, 1 day was given food; P2 was 1 day fasted, 2 days was given food, and P3 was 1 day fasted, 3 days were given food. The analysis of variance showed that periodic fasting of the climbing perch had a significant effect on absolute body weight growth, and feed efficiency (P<0.05), but had no significant effect on survival rates, absolute length growth, and ammonia. P1 treatment (1 day fasted, 1 day fed) showed the best results with feed efficiency of 21.87%, length growth of 0.23 cm, weight growth of 0.22 g, and survival of 100%. Parameters of water quality during culture are temperature 24.8–27.6℃, pH 6.0-7.4, dissolved oxygen 3.27-4.93 mg L-1, and ammonia 0.02-0.05 mg L-1. The water quality was still in a condition suitable for climbing perch farming.
