Abstract
Topical application is an act of giving anticaries material that in this study used APF gel 1.23% and NaF solution 2%. Fluoride as a topical application material has been reported to have an antibacterial effect that inhibits acid formation and growth of microorganisms in dental plaque. The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of topical application with APF 1, 23% and NaF 2% against the degree of plaque acidity and the level of plaque accumulation. The method used in this study is clinical experimental which applies post-test only control group design. The study was conducted in SDN 25 Indralaya with a sample of 30 students who were divided into 3 groups: control group, group APF 1.23% and group NaF 2%. The data were taken ffom the degree of the plaque acidity using plaque indicator kit and level of plaque accumulation using score index of plaque modification Turesky of Quigley-Hein. It was analyzed by using ANOVA. Statistical analysis showed that there were significant differences in the level of plaque accumulation after topical application (significancy < 0,05), while there is no significant difference in the degree of plaque acidity (significancy > 0,05). The conclusion of this study that there is no effect of topical application with APF 1.23% and NaF solution 2% against the degree of plaque acidity and there is an effect of topical application with APF 1.23% and NaF solution 2% against the level of plaque accumulation. From the results of this study, gel APF 1.23% showed the highest effectiveness against the level of plaque accumulation compared with the NaF solution 2%.
