Abstract
Background: Streptococcus mutans is known to be one of bacteria that causes infections associated with several dental and oral diseases including alveolar osteitis or dry socket. Antibacterial content is not only found in herbal plants but also in the skin mucus of Snakehead fish (Channa striata). Snakehead fish (Channa striata) skin mucus contains antibacterial substances such as lysozyme and antimicrobial peptides which are effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria so that they can be used as natural antibacterial alternatives. Objective: The purpose of this research was to determine antibacterial effects of Snakehead fish (Channa striata) skin mucus gel against Streptococcus mutans. Methods: This study was an in vitro laboratory experimental study with three test groups such as Snakehead fish (Channa striata) skin mucus gel, 0,2 chlorhexidine gel (PerioKin, Spain) as positive control, and CMC gel as negative control. The antibacterial test of snakehead fish (Channa striata) mucus gel against Streptococcus mutans was carried out using the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method to determine value of the inhibition zone for each group. The data was then analyzed using One-way ANOVA test. Results: The inhibition test showed that the snakehead fish (Channa striata) mucus gel group and the negative control group had no antibacterial effect on Streptococcus mutans and only the 0.2% chlorhexidine gel group could inhibit Streptococcus mutans with an average inhibition zone value of 11.88 mm. Conclusion: Snakehead fish (Channa striata) skin mucus gel had no antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans. Keywords: antibacterial, gel, mucus, Snakehead fish, Streptococcus mutans
