Abstract

Based on a studies of HTA (Health Technology Assessment) Ministry of Health Indonesia 2010, thalassemia is a genetic blood disorder that is most commonly found with beta thalassemia carrier rate reaches 3-10% wheares alpha thalassemia from 1.5 to 3.6 % . Beta thalassemia patients have red blood cells defect that will spur hyperactivity of spinal cord so that affects the growth and developmental craniofacial on patient. The purpose of this study to observe the effect of beta thalassemia on facial and chepalic index to beta thalassemia’s patient 15 years old or older at Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital Palembang. The method of research is descriptive analytic cross-sectional and analyzed by chi - square test. The results showed if the sixteen samples beta thalassemia had leptoprosop and hyperleptoprosop facial index, and dolichocepalic, hyperdolichocepalic cephalic index, because red blood cells defect in patients beta thalassemia causes hemolytic anemia taht willl spur hyperactivity of the spinal cord resulting in facial bone marrow proliferation and expansion of the skull. Meanwhile, thirty- two control samples had a various facial and chepalic index, it was influenced by many factors, which generally consists of genetic and environmental factors. It was concluded that beta thalassemia affected the facial and cephalic index.
