Abstract

Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) is a foaming agent that is commonly used in toothpaste. The use ofSLS 1,5% in toothpaste can affect the healingprocess and pain of ulcers in patients with SAR. Toothpaste containing SLS 5% can decrease the sensitivity of sweet taste. Aloe vera contains saponin has a possibility to replace the SLSfunction as a foaming agent. The aim of this study was to determine whether Aloe vera extract can be applied as a foaming agent in toothpaste in terms of foaming power and homogeneity of toothpaste. This research method was laboratory experimental research. Aloe vera extract with concentration 5% were formulated in toothpaste. The toothpaste composition consisting of calcium carbonate, glycerin, SLS, and distilled water. The foaming power and homogeneity of toothpaste tests have been done on the toothpaste without foaming agent, toothpaste with SLS, and toothpaste with Aloe vera extract. Data were analyzed with Kruskal Wallis and Mann Whitney tests.. The tests result show that toothpaste with Aloe vera extract produces an average volume of foam 12.1 ml which does not reach the Standard volume of foam 50 ml and there was a sample of toothpaste with Aloe vera extract which appears inhomogeneous. In conclusion, Aloe vera extracts cannot be applied as a foaming agent in toothpaste.
