Abstract
Periodontal disease can significantly increase the risk of low birth weight babies in the course of infection suffered mothers during the pregnancy. Bacteria and inflammatory mediators have the ability to spread systemically to fetal-placenta through the blood circulation and cause complications in pregnancy, such as preterm and low birth weight. This study was conducted to assess the correlation between maternal periodontal disease and the occurrence of low birth weight babies. The method used by this study is analytical survey with the case control study. The samples were 60 people, divided into 2 groups consisting of 30 women with low birth weight baby as cases group and 30 women with normal baby as a Controls group. Data was obtained using periodontal index and papilla bleeding index then analyzed with the Mann-Whitney tes t with a significance of p< 0.05. The results showed that from 30 case respondents with low birth weight there are 20% people with normal periodontal tissue, 70% gingivitis and 10% periodontitis. The P-value/Sig. was 0.00 <0.05, so it can be concluded that there is a significant relation between maternal periodontal disease and the occurrence oflow birth weight babies. In order to reduce the risk of low birth babies, there is need to give a counseling to expectant mother about the effects of periodontal disease during pregnancy and the systemic correlation to the health of newborn babies.
