Abstract

Background: Endodontic infection is a root canal infection caused by various pathogens. Natural root canal irrigants used on endodontic treatment because it could eliminate microorganisms and non-toxic, such as propolis. Peptostreptococcus anaerobius is one of obligate anaerobic Gram positive bacterium commonly found in primer endodontic infections. Objective: T o evaluate the antibacterial effectiveness of 15%, 20%, 25%, and 30% propolis against Peptostreptococcus anaerobius. Methods. Peptostreptococcus anaerobius strain was selected to determine the antibacterial activity of propolis by using the Kirby Bauer method. Metronidazole was used as positive control and sterilized water as negative control. Paper discs were moistened with test Solutions and placed on the chocolate blood agar medium plates contained bacterial inoculation. Antibacterial activity seen from the large diameter of inhibitory zone formed around the paper disc. Inhibitory zones recorded and the results were analyzed statistically. Statistical analysis was performed with the Kruskal-Wallis test (p<0,05). Dijferences in inhibitory were identified by Post-Hoc Mann-Whitney test (p<0,05). ResulL Each concentration of propolis tested had different effect against Peptostreptococcus anaerobius. According to CLSI, averages of inhibitory zone of propolis included to resistant category. The average of inhibitory zone of metronidazole had significant result compared to other Solutions tested. Conclusion. The present study showed that there was significant differences antibacterial effect of various concentrations of propolis. Peptostreptococcus anaerobius was resistant to 15%, 20%, 25%, and 30% propolis. 15%, 20%, 25%, and 30% propolis could not use as Standard root canal irrigant.
