Abstract

Pulokerto area, 112 hectares, is a Musi river delta, belong to, administratively, Kecamatan Gandus. This area is a low land dominated by a swampy ecosystem with a function as a water catchment area as well as a green open space for the inland are of Palembang, so that it also function as an carbon stock area. The objective of this research was to determine the carbon content of the mulches in the area as an effort to minimize the mitigation effect of the climate change of Palembang. Mulches in this research was defined as a dead organic material on top of mineral soil. The carbon stock (content) was measured by the biomass approach with the assumption of 50% of the biomass was the carbon stock. The plot was design using Purposive Random Sampling with; 6 plot with area of 200 m2 at the entrance zone, conservation zone, rice field zone, Fish-politant zone (Agropolitant Master Plan of Palembang, 2009). Biomass and carbon content store on the mulches were measured on each zone. The research found that the carbon content on the mulches at the conservation zone was 22,68 ? 68,04 ton/ha; entrance zone in the range of 47,37-69,22 ton/ha, while on the fish-politant zone 26,71 ton/ha. The lowest was found on the rice field area (9,74 ton/ha). The Indonesian Government has agree to lower the global emission as much as 16%, so that the city also has to adopt this decision. The research also found that the carbon stock on the area, with the assumption that 30% of the area is green area, is 243,77 ton/ha. The high mulch found on the research has an implication that the mulch has a capability to absorb the CO2 from the air, as a result of the microorganism and fauna of the soil, and also function as a carbon stock
