Abstract

A family has a role in supporting bilingual or multilingual children. In acquiring English for instance, family language policy (FLP) is likely to shape the development of children's bilingualism or multilingualism. Through a qualitative research approach in a case study design, the three components of FLP and the factors shaping it of two bi-/multilingual families in Palembang were investigated and explored. The participants of this study were the Zahra and the Najwa family who were bringing up their children in more than one language including English. The data were collected through participant observations, ethnographic interviews with the parents, grandmother, and children, children‟s language portraits, and artifacts. They were analyzed using the standard qualitative analysis with thematic analysis; the data were coded and classified into categories to derive big major themes regarding the components of language policy. The results indicated that what they have believed and viewed in each language had been accomplished and applied in their practices and management. The language that had the highest status and values was practiced, exposed, controlled, and maintained in the highest quality and quantity. However, the parents needed no extra attempts to the language that held the lowest status and values. As a result, the children were multilingual in some levels of proficiency of each language, global, national, and heritage language(s). Therefore, families need to provide support for their children in their bilingual or multilingual journey. Stakeholders and professionals need to provide considerable support and assistance for language policy in the family domain.
