Abstract

The objectives of this study were to find out how bilingual education program of dual curriculum was enacted in SMAN 17, how the teachers and students perceived the implementation of the program, and how language negotiations between teachers and students occurred. The participants of this study were the coordinator, science teachers, and the tenth-graders of the program. In this qualitative case study, the data were gathered using interviews and observations and analyzed using five analytic stages: organizing and planning the results, paying attention to all data, coding the data, generating the description and themes, and reflecting descriptions and themes. The trustworthiness of the data was conducted through triangulation and member checking process. The findings of this study showed that, first, the school tried to integrate the 2013 curriculum and the Cambridge curriculum by mapping both curricula. Second, all the science teachers and most students had positive perspectives and admitted the benefits of the program regardless of the challenges they faced. Third, the language of instruction used depended on the teachers. Sometimes they mixed English and Indonesian, spoke in English, continued with Indonesian, and mixed the language by explaining in full English and reviewing in full Indonesian. The teachers re-explained in English using different vocabulary and more emphasis on the words, in the mix of English and Indonesian, and fully in Indonesian when the students did not get the explanation. Bilingual education program of dual curriculum has been implemented relatively well. However, some improvements are required to enhance the program. Local government, Cambridge program coordinator, and participating teachers need to strengthen each other by working collaboratively.
