Abstract
This paper describes results of multivariate analysis on soil data which are used to examine the uniformity of mineralogical composition, cation exchange capacity, and exchangeable aluminium. We studied the geological formations of Air Benakat (Tma), Muara Enim (Tmpm), Kasai (Qtk), and sediment (Qs) as examples. The cluster analysis shows similarity in topsoil properties for Air Benakat and sedimentary samples, while Muara Enim and Kasai form different groups. For subsoils, similarity occurs between Air Benakat and Kasai. For all data canonical variate analysis also indicates a significant separation between formations in which quarzt content accounts for 77 % of data variation. Similarly principal component analysis shows a significant contribution of turbid and transparent quartz to separate Muara Enim from Kasai. Clay CEC distinguishes the sedimentary formation. The first two dimensions account for 84 % of the total variation. In contrast to similarity index of single mineral, multivariate analysis can handle many variables that in turn gives a more comprehensive understanding of how soil properties contribute to the variation.
