Abstract

Reading comprehension mastery is impacted by a wide variety of factors, including reading motivation, reading habit, self-esteem, and personality. This study was aimed at finding out whether or not the five variables were significantly correlated. A hundred and five 8th graders in the academic year 2017/2018 were taken as the sample by using total sampling. The Motivation for Reading Questionaire (MRQ), Reading Habit questionnaire, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), Eysenck Personality Inventory (EPI), and reading comprehension test were used as the instruments for collecting the data. The data obtained were analyzed by using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient formula. The results showed that there were significant correlation between reading motivation and reading comprehension mastery, between reading habit and reading comprehension mastery, between self-esteem and reading comprehension mastery, between personality types and reading comprehension mastery, and between predictor variables (reading motivation, reading habit, self-esteem, and personality type) and criterion variable (reading comprehension mastery). In conclusion, the better students’ reading motivation, reading habit, self-esteem, and the more extrovert the students are, the better their reading comprehension mastery will be.
