Abstract

The Indonesian government regulation no 20 year 2018 states that the goal of national education is to develop educated people with life skills and good character building. This study aimed at finding out the: (1) English teachers‟ understanding of character building prescribed in 2013 Curriculum, (2) integration of character building in English learning, (3) reasons teachers apply certain character(s) in English learning, and (4) challenges of the integration of character building in English learning. This study used qualitative research method. The participants were two English teachers and sixty two students from two classes of SMP Negeri 18 Palembang. The data were collected through questionnaire, interview, observation and document review. The results of the interview revealed that in understanding the character building, Teacher A was in the level of good, while teacher B was in fair level. The reasons of applying the characters were due to the appropriate material and five main characters in Penguatan Pendidikan Karakter. From the observations, it was found that there were 15 out of 18 characters taught by using explicit and implicit method and only 6 characters were found in 8 lesson plans. Some obstacles in integrating the characters, such as confusion in determining the characters recommended and students‟ different characteristics were uncovered.
